ASHA CHOWDARY [26 Mar, 2007 0326hrs IST, TIMES NEWS NETWORK ] Alpha male icons like John Abraham and Milind Soman have set the trend by experimenting with hairstyles.
American Idol contestant Sanjaya Malakar is a huge hit, primarily for his hair.
He began with the flip, moved on to straight, sleek and sexy hair, and now he's sporting a fringe. American Idol hopeful Sanjaya Malakar, the only Indian to have reached the final rounds of the hugely contested singing competition held in the US, is known more for his hair than his vocals. Does that faze him?
Apparently not, as his hair now denotes his trademark style. Closer home, it's alpha male icons like John Abraham and Milind Soman who set the trend by experimenting with hairstyles. And today stylists believe it's boom time in their salons as men have begun demanding hair procedures like straightening, perming and colouring like never before.
Do men with interesting hair styles make heads turn? Says director Guru Kiran, "I have shoulder-length hair and it has always made me stand out. When I was in hostel, I had to cut my hair all the time and so the day I left college, I rebelled against the rule. Now, my hair is part of my identity and, yes, people do give you a second look when you do something with your hair."
According to actor Murali, men should do interesting things with their hair as long as they have it. "I've grown my hair and now wear a hairband too," he says. "I've been getting loads of attention because of my long hair. In these times when so many men are losing hair and getting bald earlier, it is good that men work on their hairstyles while they have a good mop of hair."
Music man Anoop has always made a fashion statement with his hair. "Earlier I used to have spiked orange hair, but now I've let my mane grow and I also wear a hairband," he says.
"I've coloured my hair blond and black in front and at the back, all the earlier shades of red and orange have merged into an exotic colour which people keep admiring all the time. In fact, nowadays, I go shopping for interesting hairbands and bandanas too. As for Sanjaya, his hair style is so appealing, I think it makes him look like a rock star."
Adds choreographer Rahul Dev Shetty, "I have shoulderlength hair that I've coloured golden brown. It gives me an individuality but I don't really spend too much time over it. Today, first impressions are very important and you can gain or lose a contract because of the way you look. Nice hair would always be to a man's advantage."
Experts in the field also believe that men should experiment with their hair. Says Jawed Habib, hair expert, "The hottest colours right now are blond, khaki or coffee brown. John Abraham started a huge trend in men's hair and though a new hairstyle did not make dramatic changes for Dhoni, Milind Soman who has truly beautiful hair does something different every year and it looks so good."
