Nagesh Kukunoor says his next flick is about high hopes

Filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor believes in happy endings; he wants his audience to come out of the theatre elated. With the same conviction, Kukunoor is ready with his latest film Aashayein, slated to hit the screens shortly. He calls its genre “uplifting drama” and hopes that the film helps people learn to “live life now”. In a rewind mode, Kukunoor shares, “I used to be a chemical engineer who planned every detail. I used to wonder if I would ever achieve my dream of making a film. Then I decided to stop planning and just follow my dream.” He adds: “The three words I want people to remember if the film delivers what it promises is ‘live life now’. Though it sounds a little preachy but I promise the film isn’t preachy.”

According to the director, Aashayein was the toughest journey in terms of making a film. “I continually try to make a film that appeals to me as a storyteller. And if my faith and belief in the product is 100 per cent only then I think the product is worth bringing out,” Kukunoor recounts.

The film revolves around a gambler played by John Abraham. Ask him why he chose an actor better known for his looks than his histrionics, Kukunoor says: “When I did Dor and cast Ayesha Takia everyone said the same thing. My only answer was, see the film and judge for yourself.”

In the promos of the film, one finds Kukunoor’s mention as the maker of Iqbal and Dor, but not Bombay to Bangkok-his last film that bombed at the box office. “When we promote a film we try to find out what is the best way to project the film— in terms of genre or category. Both Iqbal and Dor were uplifting films and therefore they were best for Aashayein,” explains Kukunoor. “Besides, who wants to be reminded of failures,” he quips.
